Jewelry Care

best practices

Here are our tips for ensuring the longevity of your gold-plated, stainless steel, and feather jewelry.

From layered necklaces and pendants to charm bracelets and butterfly earrings - we've got you covered.

Gold-plated Jewelry:

After a few years, our skin's chemistry and exposure to solvents and cleaning agents can cause the gold plating to wear away. To ensure the life-long wearability of your gold-plated jewelry, keep these simple tips in mind.

  1. Remove your jewelry before entering the water, especially if it's chlorinated or salty.
  2. Take your jewelry off if you will sweat in a workout of any kind.
  3. Wait to wear your jewelry until after you've washed and any lotion has absorbed into your skin.
  4. When not in use, keep your jewelry stored in a soft bag, or even better, in an airtight container (aka a plastic baggie), away from other jewelry or hard surfaces that could scratch it.
  5. Avoid scrubbing. If it needs to be cleaned, soak it in warm, soapy water (dish soap is great). Gently rub dry with a paper towel or tissue. Remember, the softer, the better.
  6. Ultimately, if you love a piece and it begins to fade, you can always have it re-plated!

Stainless Steel Jewelry:

Silver is the color of emotional purity and protection. Our Stainless steel is incredibly durable. It can be prone to smudging, so here are some tips to keep it shiny.

  1. Wait to wear your jewelry until after you've washed and any lotion has absorbed into your skin.
  2. When not in use, keep your jewelry stored in a soft bag. It's not prone to oxidation, so airtight storage isn't necessary.
  3. If it needs to be cleaned, soak it in warm, soapy water (dish soap is great). Gently rub dry with a paper towel or tissue. Remember, the softer, the better.
  4. Use a stainless steel polishing cream and a jewelry cloth to polish your stainless steel jewelry. Wash thoroughly to remove any cream residue. Avoid cleaning sprays for appliances as they may be toxic if absorbed through your skin.

Ear Cuffs:

Each ear cuff I make is unique. Every one is handmade, considering each feather's shape and placement to create a distinct sense of feng shui.

1. To wear your ear cuff, hook it over the top of your ear first. Then, hook it around your ear and pull out your earlobe. You want the metal resting against your temple and jaw like this:

2. Give your head a little shake. It can be exchanged for a different size if it's too loose or too tight.

Sometimes, feathers get ruffled, but it's easy to get the barbs of the overall feather vane back into a tidy orientation.

  1. Remove your feather jewelry and hold the feather in your non-dominant hand with the tip pointing away from you
  2. Take your dominant hand, and using your thumb and index finger, gently pull the barbs into alignment
  3. If it needs serious help, run the feather(s) under a gentle flow of water to help realign the barbs.

Remember, birds get wet and are used to preening their feathers; it's ok to apply that same style of care to feathers on your ear cuff.

Storage and Traveling:

I recommend storing your feather ear cuffs in an empty sunglass case when traveling.  At home, hanging them on the wall also works well.
